A Sucker For Cool Packaging
My co-worker Matt found this cool website the other day that sells gourmet coffee. You see I mentioned the website before the coffee because well, the site is really nicely done and that was the initial draw. The red and black and gold is very dramatic. We had never heard of Gorilla Coffee before but heck, the packaging was so nice we just had to get some.
Matt was actually the guinea pig, he ordered up a pound of the whole bean “Guatemalan Huehuetenago” and was suprised to get a note not long after his purchase telling him that his beans were just being roasted and would be shipped right away. Sure enough, in record time the bright red bag of coffee was at his door. From Matt’s reports, it’s pretty awesome. That’s a good thing.. I mean, with all the fabulous packaging it should be good. Right?
Today I took the plunge, I ordered up the “Gorilla Gift Box” which has 3 pounds of coffee and even better than that, comes in a cool wooden box with a silk-screened top and the company logo woodburned on the bottom. Now, ask me if I NEED a wooden box. Did I need to spend the $45 to have this box (with some coffee in it) delivered to me? Probably not. Am I a sucker for good packaging. Sadly, very much so.
My confirmation email said they were going to Nicaragua to get more beans and my order would ship next Tuesday. I guess I can spend the time clearing a place on my desk for my fancy new box. Oh, and I get coffee too.
Be sure to check out www.gorillacoffee.com

I know you’re all gitty over the box – but I will say that when I first opened the bag of beans, it was a bit of an emotional experience. The smell AMAZING.
Matt posted his Gorilla Coffee Review here.
I got the coffee in the mail yesterday and couldn’t wait to open it up. The box smelled truly “AMAZING” as Matt likes to say. The 3 pounds of coffee were fine, but my spiffy new box was busted. Very sad moment. This story has a happy ending though. I contacted Darleen at Gorilla Coffee and she shipped me out a new box right away. What great service. Thanks Darleen!
Now, the coffee. This could be the best I’ve ever had. The flavor is incredibly rich and bold, but never bitter. The Espresso-a-go-go had a nice sweetness and a wonderful aroma, the Guatemalan blend was just pure heaven, and the Sumatra has a nice, somewhat floral finish thats just plain smooth. Excellent product. I highly recommend it.
Not only did I have the pleasure of going to Gorilla Coffee in Brooklyn, but I had the pleasure of going to college with the owner Darleen Scherer at John Carroll University. I was able to smell the coffee about a block away, before I arrived at the coffee shop. Coffee lovers, you won’t be disappointed. Gorilla Coffee is terrific! Great coffee, great service, and great atmosphere. Enjoy!
