Note: Pixelmator has been out for a short while now and has established a pretty good fan base. They just updated to version 1.1 and have added several new features that make it even a better value.

Pixelmator, presents itself as a beautifully designed, easy-to-use, powerful image editing solution for Mac OS X. It has a full assortment of the most widely used painting, gradient, blending and retouching tools along with a complete set of advanced selection tools. Layer-based editing is also a feature (as any good graphics app should have these days) and there are some interesting additonal features as well. You can import and image from the iSight camera directly into a layer as well drag and drop images from your iPhoto library directly into a layer.

I’ve always been fascinated with cutaway views and technical illustrations. It’s that point where architecture and engineering meet artistry. I can remember having a large cutaway illustration of Star Trek’s Enterprise hanging on my wall many years ago. Anyhow, I was intrigued to find this tutorial on how the artist illustrates cutaway versions of cruise ships. He chooses to use Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop over traditional CAD rendering techniques as he feels he has more creative control in the illustration packages. The level of detail and precision is truly amazing.

Wow. Somebody really had a lot of free time on their hands for this one. The is hands down the largest pixel art piece I’ve ever come across. It’s incredibly complex and it just goes on and on. It’s truly massive. The whole piece comes out to 10,000 pixels wide and little more than that tall. Thats almost 140″ tall at just 72dpi. You really have to see it to belive it.
